A Muslim Stanford University student was injured in a hit-and-run by a driver who allegedly yelled “fuck you and your people,” and California police are investigating the incident as a racially motivated hate crime. , the school said Sunday.
The victim was struck Friday afternoon by a driver who allegedly made eye contact with him before driving away and yelling out the open car window, according to the Stanford Department of Public Safety.
He described the driver as a white man in his 20s, with short dirty blonde hair, a short beard and round-framed glasses. The car was reportedly a Toyota 4Runner.
“I never imagined being the victim of an attack motivated by hate,” the victim said in a statement to ABC News. “Their screams of hate… still echo in my ears.”
The student was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, but said the psychological trauma of the attack would remain.
“The physical wounds will heal in time, but the emotional scars (the feeling of being attacked solely for my physical appearance, heritage and beliefs) are likely to linger.”
“As I lie in my hospital bed, dealing with a reality I had never imagined, I reflect on the importance of spreading love, kindness and compassion in a world that seems to be constantly succumbing to hate and prejudice,” he said.
Stanford University condemned the incident and called hate crimes “morally reprehensible” in a statement.
Stanford University said it was “deeply disturbed” by reports of the incident, adding that “hate-based violence is morally reprehensible.”
“We condemn it in the strongest terms,” the school said.
The school faced criticism following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel after banners calling the Jewish state an “occupation” were displayed on campus buildings.

The school had the banners removed, but clarified that they were doing so “based on the location of the banners, not the content or point of view expressed,” while insisting that it maintained a neutral position on the conflict.
