Deep-sea explorers think they’ve found gold, or maybe something sinister.
A team of deep-sea researchers discovered a mysterious golden flesh-shaped orb at the bottom of the ocean, one so extraterrestrial it looked like “the beginning of a horror movie.”
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) team found the mysterious orb on Wednesday of last week about two miles deep in “the deep abyssal depths of the Gulf of Alaska,” the Miami Herald said.
The mysterious orb seemed to be shaped like meat, with an even more puzzling hole.
“Something tried to get in… or out,” observed a researcher on a live feed from the Seascape Alaska mission.
“I just hope that when we play it, something doesn’t decide to come out,” said another, according to the Herald. “It’s like the beginning of a horror movie.”

“I’m pretty sure that’s how the first episode of The X-Files started,” another team member said, according to The Mirror.
The team, exploring an extinct volcano 400 kilometers off the coast of southern Alaska, used a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and “tickled” the egg, reporters said, alerting them to the fact that It was delicate to the touch like skin tissue. .
The ROV then gently “sucked” the strange object up a tube so it could be tested in a lab.

Until then, “the orb remains a mystery,” NOAA ship Okeanos explorer Emily Crum told The Mirror on Tuesday after speaking with the expedition coordinator.
“It looks like they won’t learn more until the expedition is over and they can get the specimen into a full lab,” he said.
Although still baffled, scientists made guesses, with some thinking it could be the carcass of an egg or the remains of a sponge, according to reports.

“When our collective knowledge can’t identify it, it’s a strange thing,” said one team member. “What kind of animal would make an eggshell like that?”
The dive is part of the Seascape Alaska 5 expedition, which began on August 24 and will continue through September 15.
During the exploration, which is being broadcast live by NOAA, scientists will record video of areas never before seen by humans, including some as deep as 4 miles.
