Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was ordered to “immediately” vacate her hidden office in the Capitol on Wednesday, as she criticized Acting Speaker Patrick McHenry’s decision as a “sharp departure from the tradition”.
An email sent to Pelosi’s office on Tuesday said “the room will be rescheduled” and reassigned for “speaker use,” Politico first reported.
The move came just hours after McHenry was named speaker pro tempore of the House of Representatives following the ouster of Kevin McCarthy in a historic vote Tuesday.
“With all the important decisions that must be addressed by the new Republican leadership, which we are all anxiously awaiting, one of the first actions taken by the new President Pro Temper was to order me to immediately leave my office in the Capitol,” Pelosi said. in a statement, referring to McHenry.
Pelosi had two separate terms as Speaker of the House, first from 2007 to 2011 and then again from 2019 to 2022.
“This eviction is a clear departure from tradition. As Speaker, I gave former Speaker (Dennis) Hastert a significantly larger group of officers for as long as he wanted.
Pelosi said she is in California, where she is mourning the death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein and cannot retrieve her belongings from the office.

Feinstein died on Friday at age 90 after a series of health problems.
Feinstein’s body will be placed in custody at San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday, while Pelosi is expected to speak at a memorial service in front of City Hall on Thursday.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ staff helped clean Pelosi’s office Tuesday night, the outlet reported.
A television and bags were seen outside the office before they were taken away.

Pelosi was absent when the House voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker in a vote pushed by members of her own party.

Eight Republicans (Andy Biggs of Arizona, Ken Buck of Colorado, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Eli Crane of Arizona, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Bob Good of Virginia, Nancy Mace of South Carolina and Matt Rosendale of Montana) joined 208 Democrats to remove McCarthy from power by a vote of 216-210.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) is the early favorite to succeed McCarthy.
