OpenAI has opened up Internet browsing access to select users of its popular chatbot ChatGPT, allowing AI to search the web for up-to-date information. This “Browse” feature gives paid ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise subscribers access beyond the original AI training data that ended in 2021.
While expanding AI knowledge could improve its capabilities, ethical concerns have been raised around allowing ChatGPT to freely access unfiltered content from the Internet. OpenAI claims it has installed appropriate ethical restrictions, but it remains to be seen whether the AI can resist problematic content.
Partnership with Microsoft enables web browsing
ChatGPT’s browsing capabilities arise from its integration into Microsoft’s Bing search engine, available to paying ChatGPT customers. This partnership also enabled new voice recognition features in ChatGPT, allowing users to talk to the AI.
Image capabilities have also been added, with ChatGPT able to understand and respond to visual information. However, early tests show that AI still has difficulty interpreting people and social dynamics in images. Rapid feature expansions continue
With AI competition on the rise, OpenAI continues to expand ChatGPT’s capabilities at a rapid pace. A developer version of ChatGPT is scheduled to receive memory and vision updates in November.
More announcements are expected at the upcoming OpenAI conference, as they race to stay ahead of rival AI systems. While impressive, the pace of development raises more questions about responsible AI practices.
