‘Our submarines don’t implode’: Metro criticized for mocking Titanic submarine implosion on Billboard

In today’s competitive marketplace, brands often strive to capture consumers’ attention by taking advantage of current events and trends. While this approach can effectively grab attention and generate excitement, there are times when the line between clever marketing and nasty exploitation gets blurred.

A recent example of such controversy involves a Georgia Subway franchise, which came under fire for a sign that appeared to make light of a tragic disaster.

Subway, the popular sandwich chain, is facing severe backlash for its recent ad campaign, which belittled the tragic Titan submersible disaster.

A billboard outside a Subway restaurant in Georgia prominently displayed the slogan: “Our submarines don’t implode.”

This callous marketing move has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about the brand’s judgment when tackling sensitive topics.

Customers were highly critical of Subway’s attempt at humor, deeming it “off-putting” and “sad”. Some even commented on the poor taste of the billboard. The authenticity of the sign was questioned, with social media users speculating whether it had been Photoshopped.

However, Subway confirmed that the sign was genuine and attributed it to a franchise operator.

The company disapproved of the comment, saying it had no place in its business.

The Titan submersible met a tragic fate while attempting to explore the wreckage of the Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland in Canada.

All five people on board, including Shahzada Dawood, her son Suleman, billionaire Hamish Harding, diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet and OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, lost their lives when the sub imploded.

Before the imploded submarine was discovered, an international search was conducted to locate the missing vessel and rescue the passengers. Unfortunately, it is now known that the crew perished shortly after the submarine imploded underwater.

Insensitive comments about the incident were made on social media during the search. The Subway billboard is just one example of a series of incidents that appear to downplay the tragic deaths of the five passengers.
