Putin ally Ramzan Kadyrov says if suspected criminals can’t be found, their families will be killed instead

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has called for the execution of relatives of suspected criminals who cannot be found.

During a December 30 meeting of the Chechen Republic’s Interior Ministry, Kadyrov told security commanders that family members are acceptable recipients of punishment for criminal suspects who are not detained.

“If someone, an officer or a tourist, violates public safety, and we don’t even find the offender, we will not continue searching for him, but we will find his relatives,” Kadyrov said, according to translations from News Week.

He continued: “As has been customary since time immemorial, if one of the relatives has done something wrong and the criminal cannot be found, his brother, his father, would be killed.”

The comments were reportedly related to the region’s plans to ensure public safety during the holidays.

“Therefore, our blood feud will be paid very quickly. Otherwise, one person kills another and lives with impunity, and his relatives begin to give up on her,” Kadyrov stated.

He continued: “No resignation of a family member is effective until we kill someone from their family and take the right to blood feud.”

Kadyrov is a close ally of Putin, who appointed him to govern restive Chechnya in 2007.
