What are the laws against Deepfakes in India?
Although India lacks a clearly defined statute to specifically address deepfake cybercrimes, many other laws can be used to combat the crime.
Section 66E of the IT Act, 2000 applies in cases of deepfake offenses that involve capturing, publishing or transmitting photographs of a person in the media, infringing their privacy.
This offense is punishable with up to three years in prison or a fine of up to Rs 2 lakh. Section 66D of the IT Act is another important section. It includes a provision to prosecute persons who use communication devices or computer resources with malicious intent to deceive or impersonate someone, with imprisonment of up to three years and/or a fine of up to one lakh rupees.
These sections of the IT Act can be used to prosecute people in India who are involved in deepfake cybercrimes.
