As mentioned, Pick N Pay announced its demise. He took to social media and wrote: “It is with deep sadness that we announce that Pick n Pay founder Raymond Ackerman has passed away. A visionary entrepreneur, humanitarian and a great South African. Our country has lost a brilliant patriot who always saw a positive future for South Africa. He grew up in Cape Town and graduated from Diocesan College (Bishops). He subsequently enrolled at the University of Cape Town, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in commerce. He began his career at the Ackerman’s retail chain founded by his father. But the retail chain was sold to Greatermans in 1946, starting the Checkers supermarket group. In 1959, Ackerman became chief executive of Checkers, but was fired after clashes with Greaterman’s board of directors seven years later.
