WhatsApp, a popular messaging platform, has been releasing updates frequently in recent months in an effort to improve user experience and privacy. According to WABetaInfo, the latest development in this regard involves a profile update. WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new username option that will allow users to choose their own unique identifier.
This new function brings WhatsApp’s way of communication closer to that of Instagram, another application owned by Meta. While the details of how WhatsApp identities will work are unknown, it has the potential to revolutionize the way people communicate on the platform. Instead of exchanging personal phone numbers or QR codes to start a chat, users can communicate using just their chosen username. In particular, conversations initiated by usernames will continue to be protected by WhatsApp’s strong end-to-end encryption, ensuring confidentiality.
This announcement follows the release of another highly anticipated feature, message editing. With this update, WhatsApp users can now edit a sent message within 15 minutes of sending it. In particular, a label of “edited” will accompany the message, which means that it has been modified after it was sent.
Additionally, in May, the messaging app introduced “Chat Lock,” a utility that gives users the option to password-protect or biometrically secure specific individual or group chats. This feature also prohibits message previews from being displayed as notifications.
