Ricardo the bull on the road to recovery after fighting infection since Christmas

Ricardo the bull, the famous Texas Longhorn who was filmed running down train tracks in Newark after escaping from a slaughterhouse, has been battling an infection since Christmas.

But the staff at Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue is optimistic about his recovery.

The wayward bull arrived at the sanctuary in Wantage, New Jersey, with a half-dollar-sized “road rash” on his right hind leg, the facility said on its Facebook page.

On Christmas Eve, Ricardo’s wound became inflamed and he was taken to Cornell Large Animal Hospital.

“The doctors took samples of the infection that was there and sent them to the lab to make sure they are on the right track with the antibiotics. He is in a cast just to keep him from bending his leg at the hock so the skin can heal quickly,” the sanctuary said at the time.

“It looks like he will be in the hospital for a while, probably weeks,” the sanctuary added.

In a Jan. 14 update, it said “our beautiful boy seems to be improving thanks to his amazing doctors at Cornell Large Animal Hospital…slowly but surely.”

And the last message says that Ricardo is “a little better every day” as the infection heals.

“We are more than three hours from the hospital. “We have so much to do here at the sanctuary that we can’t come visit very often, so I’m bothering the fantastic doctors to send me photos of Ricardo so I can share them with all of you,” the sanctuary posted on Tuesday.

The wayward bull has been treated at Cornell Large Animal Hospital.

“Those doctors are very busy saving animals, but they send us photos and call me daily to update me… His release date is when he is ready to return home and his wound is completely healed,” she wrote.

On Thursday, Mike Stura, president and founder of the sanctuary, told NBC News that veterinarians have the infection under control and that all that remains is “a small wound.”

Stura told the outlet that Ricardo will call Skylands his home for the rest of his life.

The bull caused quite a commotion when it was seen walking up and down the train tracks near Newark Penn Station on December 14 after escaping from a local slaughterhouse.

Their escape disrupted train service to and from New York City for about 45 minutes.

The Internet fell in love with Ricardo, who was named after a police officer and was turned into a stuffed toy sold by NJ Transit.
