Ritz-Carlton faces lawsuit after guest claims employee served him water ‘contaminated with semen’

In November 2022, a married mother of three, known as Jane Doe in court documents, booked a room at the luxurious five-star Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay to spend a “relaxing and indulgent” birthday weekend with her husband.

During his four-night stay, Doe requested that water be brought to his room. In the middle of the night, he took a sip from a bottle of hotel-brand water and “realized that the taste and texture of the water he had ingested may have been semen,” according to the lawsuit filed early in this month.

“Doe was mortified, terrified, embarrassed and humiliated, but shared her suspicions with her husband,” according to court documents. She subsequently contacted the hotel, which offers rooms for more than $800 a night, and informed the local police.

What did the investigation reveal?

Court documents state that the Ritz-Carlton sent the water bottle for testing, which confirmed the presence of semen. Throughout their 25 years of marriage, Jane Doe and her husband frequently stayed at Marriott-brand hotels, including Ritz-Carlton properties.

The lawsuit maintains that the traumatic experience led her to seek therapy. Jane Doe, a homemaker living in Washington State, shared these sentiments in her presentation.

“To make matters worse, the Ritz-Carlton and Marriott International have refused to provide Jane and John Doe with a copy of the actual lab results for the water bottle in question,” according to the document.

The lawsuit claimed that Jane Doe was suffering from emotional distress, primarily stemming from concerns about possibly ingesting a sexually transmitted virus.

The lawsuit claims that the police investigation into the contamination of the water bottle has stalled because the hotel has refused to hand over the dirty bottle.

This refusal prevents authorities from matching DNA in the water with sex offender registries.

Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that The Ritz-Carlton and Marriott International refused to reveal the identities of hotel employees who were working on the day of the incident, preventing scrutiny of their criminal records and backgrounds.

The complaint seeks damages for sexual assault and negligence and requests a jury trial to resolve the case.

Despite the ongoing investigation, The Ritz-Carlton has not cooperated with authorities, according to the lawsuit. They declined to share the lab results from the water bottle and did not provide information about the staff on duty during Jane Doe’s stay.

In response, the lawsuit claims the hotel offered Doe and her husband some Marriott rewards points, which could only be used for another stay at a Ritz-Carlton property.

Terrence Jones, an attorney with the Cameron Jones law firm who represents Jane and John Doe, told the New York Post: “One of our client’s main concerns is that this perpetrator be apprehended to prevent further victimization. Until now, The Ritz-Carlton and Marriott have focused more on hiding information than cooperating, apparently to protect their reputations rather than the hotel guests.”
