In a heartbreaking case that has shocked the community, Roger Aaron Denig, a 21-year-old father, faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with the tragic death of his two-month-old daughter, Ammarie. What initially appeared to be a case of a medical condition took a dark turn when medical professionals discovered alarming evidence of abuse. On June 21 at 9:40 am, Ammarie’s mother made a distressing 911 call to the Lemhi County Sheriff’s Office and reported that her daughter was unable to breathe. Paramedics took Amarie and the entire Denig family to a local hospital in eastern Lemhi County. Denig informed the medical team that her daughter suffered from laryngomalacia, a congenital condition that softens the tissues above the larynx. Denig alleged that her daughter choked due to this condition.
Medical professionals worked diligently to resuscitate Amarie at Steele Memorial Medical Center before transferring her to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. However, a subsequent CT scan revealed distressing news. Amarie had suffered multiple brain injuries, indicative of a severe external physical assault. Subsequent exams exposed additional troubling details, including retinal hemorrhaging, broken ribs in various stages of healing, and old bruises on the boy’s chest. The evidence supported the conclusion that Amarie had suffered from shaken baby syndrome, a severe form of child abuse.
Despite the best efforts of the medical teams, Ammarie’s brain stopped working, leaving the doctors with bleak prospects. She remained on life support at the Primary Children’s Hospital before finally succumbing to her injuries on the fateful night of June 23. An autopsy confirmed the presence of more broken ribs in different stages of healing, strengthening the case against Denig. The medical examiner concluded Ammarie’s cause of death was a traumatic head injury, a heartbreaking end to her innocent life.
The loss of Ammarie has left our community devastated and desperate for justice. The evidence strongly indicates that she was a victim of child abuse, subjected to unthinkable physical harm that ultimately claimed her life.
