He recalled being “ecstatic” when Apoorva became pregnant with her first child about halfway through her medical residency. The couple wrote letters to their unborn child “every night” during the pregnancy, hoping to “convey what stories of our parents and grandparents we wanted to tell.”

“About three and a half months later, you know, Apoorva, one day he woke up and said, ‘I’m bleeding.’ She had a miscarriage. We lost our first child. And that was the loss of a life. It was the loss of our family,” Ramaswamy said.

“After that he went through a state of depression and our faith is what helped us get through,” he added.
