Russia fired nearly three dozen drones into Kiev early Sunday, with explosions throughout the Ukrainian capital and the surrounding region for about two hours and debris falling in several districts of the city, Ukrainian officials said.
Ukraine’s air force said the military destroyed 26 of 33 drones launched by Russia, all of which were aimed at kyiv and the surrounding region.
Reuters witnesses heard at least five explosions in kyiv, where the night sky was lit by explosions from air defenses attacking targets.
A column of smoke rose between the buildings.
Kiev resident Liudmyla said she heard the whirring of Iranian-made drones before a shock wave shattered the windows of her building and the jars on her windowsill.
“It was a very scary experience; I can’t even put it into words.”
Fragments from the downed drones fell in five different districts, Mayor Vitali Klitschko and the city’s military administration said.

Klitschko said one person was injured.
The state emergency service later reported that debris had fallen in three districts, but that no serious damage had been caused.
The governor of the kyiv region, Ruslan Kravchenko, wrote on Facebook that an unspecified infrastructure facility and eight houses had been damaged as a result of the overnight attacks.
There was no immediate comment from Russia on the attacks.
Moscow has carried out regular airstrikes against Ukrainian population centers far from the eastern and southern front lines of its 18-month invasion.
A Russian attack killed 17 people on Wednesday in the eastern city of Kostiantynivka, Ukrainian officials said.
