Sreedhara Panicker Somanath is an aerospace engineer and rocket technician based in India. He is now the tenth president of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He became the fourth Malayali to be appointed president after Ksturirangan. Somanath worked mainly in the areas of vehicle design, engineering, structural design, structural dynamics and pyrotechnics.

S. Somanath was born in July 1963 in Thuravoor, Cherthala Alappuzha, Kerala. His father’s name is Sreedhara Panicker and his mother’s name is Thankamma. He did his schooling from St Augustine’s School, Aroor, and graduated from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, Indian Institute of Science, Banglore and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

Career
S. Somanath became a member of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation, in 1985. He joined the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle project in its early stages. In 2010, he became Associate Director of VSSC and Project Manager of the GSLV Mk-III launcher. He held the position of Deputy Director of Propulsion and Space Ordinance until 2014.
Somanath in 2015 became director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Center in Valiamala, where he worked until 2018. He took over the leadership at VSSC. He became chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 2022.
