Salt Lake City launches first sanctioned homeless camp

Salt Lake City is about to have its first sanctioned homeless encampment.

Miniature shelters that will house up to 50 people are being set up this winter at the Redevelopment Agency site in Utah’s capital.

State Homelessness Coordinator Wayne Niederhauser described the 27 units as small, simple houses and said he wanted to offer homeless people something more livable than a tent.

“The main concern we’ve had is the safety of those who will be using these facilities,” he told the Salt Lake City Tribune.

“We just didn’t feel like the tents met that standard in the long run.”

Each small shelter resembles a capsule about 150 square feet with a dividing wall so two people can live in it.

The pods include insulation, heating and cooling units, folding beds, and tables with seating.

The project cost about $640,000 in total.

The capsules do not have bathrooms; City officials plan to place restrooms on site and showers will be available nearby.

Niederhauser expects the site to be operational by mid-December.

Private security will monitor the site until an official site administrator is chosen.
