Kinghorn’s life changed irrevocably ten years ago when she was a teenager partying on her parents’ Scottish farm. “I had an accident when I was 14 years old,” she admitted in an interview. On the farm where I grew up, a forklift ran over me and crushed me. My whole life was turned upside down. Kinghorn lost all feeling below her waist. As she operated the forklift to remove snow from the ground, her father did not realize that her daughter was present. She traveled three hours each way from her parents’ farm to Glasgow Hospital, where she spent the next six months.
She commented: “My mother had to quit her job because she had to spend the first few weeks with me in the hospital.” “I was very sorry that she was affecting everyone else as well. Sometimes I don’t think people are aware of that. When you see a person in a wheelchair, you consider everything that has happened, but you overlook what your family is going through. A decade later, she broke British wheelchair racing records in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 metres, something that might not have happened if her hospital hadn’t introduced her to the sport.
Kinghorn, who was not particularly active before the accident, was persuaded to participate in interspinal unit competitions. This annual competition for hospitalized patients recovering from paralysis provides the opportunity to participate in a variety of wheelchair sports. He was interested because it gave him the chance to meet the husband of one of Britain’s most successful wheelchair racers. “Meeting people who have experienced the same thing as you is what gaming is all about.
