Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Review tells us what the latest smartphone looks like. Samsung recently introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4, its latest iterations of foldable devices. New accessories like the Galaxy Watch 5, Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, and Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are available to accompany these new devices. Only new smartphones will be tested for this print piece. You might be a little disappointed if you were expecting significant improvements like we saw with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 (Review) and Galaxy Z Flip 3 devices. Iterative updates, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 feature significantly modified designs, improved cameras and a next-generation processor. Even so, some of the changes are extremely significant and could be enough to win over potential buyers.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 review and price
Starting with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the price range starts at $1,799.99. Samsung claims the new Fold’s flagship-caliber cameras, more powerful SoC, and lighter body are its main selling points. The latter is the first thing I noticed, and while the Z Fold 3 weighs 271g and this model weighs 263g, the weight feels more evenly distributed. The two parts of the phone don’t sit flush with each other when closed, unlike the Flip, and it’s still a bit heavy.
This time around, the metal frame is flatter and all the ports and buttons are in their usual places. It’s also claimed to have somewhat smaller overall dimensions than the Galaxy Z Fold 3, though it’s hard to tell apart without holding the two devices side by side. Depending on how you intend to use the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the hinge feels sturdy and can open to different angles.
Features of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 now supports ‘Nightography’ features, which is the company’s marketing lingo for enhancing low-light images and videos. Samsung has taken some of the camera hardware from the Galaxy S22 series. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 includes a 50-megapixel main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3X optical zoom and up to 30X digital zoom. The selfie cameras seem to be unchanged.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a few changes, but the inner and outer screens are the same size as the previous model. The inner flip display has a more energy-efficient refresh rate range of 1Hz to 120Hz, while the outer display is now protected by Corning Gorilla Victus+ and offers an adaptive refresh rate of 48Hz to 120Hz.
Galaxy Z Fold 4 Specifications
OneUI 4.1.1 runs on top of Android 12L on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. The software is very similar to what we saw with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but Samsung has included a new taskbar feature so that whenever you open any app in full screen mode, the bottom row of apps on the home screen stays pinned next to the navigation controls. Samsung first introduced this idea as a Labs feature on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s execution feels less invasive.
Also, the taskbar will display the multi-window app pairs and frequently used programs. In addition to pinned icons, you can access the rest of your apps through a drawer. Although I’m not a big fan of the slide-out app carousel, it’s still an option if you want to use it. I think this is a better multitasking approach.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 also gets the frame-flattening treatment. Although I don’t particularly like the shiny texture of the frame, the phone looks fashionable with this purple border. Our main gripe with the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was its battery life, but Samsung happily increased the capacity to 3,700 mAh (up from 3,300 mAh) this time around to improve performance. Furthermore, it is claimed that the battery can be charged from empty to 50% in just 30 minutes. When it goes on sale abroad, this smartphone will start at $999.99.
The hinge on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is now 1.2mm smaller. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been any growth on the cover screen. Samsung says you’ll soon be able to send automatic replies to specific messages from the outer screen, though I wasn’t able to test this. It can still do the same tricks, including letting you take a selfie while the phone is folded.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 verdict
Similar “flex mode” features are available in some apps on the Galaxy Z Flip 4 when the phone is folded in half. With Flex Cam, a timed capture can be initiated simply by placing your palm in front of the camera. The “Nightography” features of the Galaxy S22 series are also touted by the Flip 4, though the Z Flip 3’s wide and ultra-wide cameras seem to use the same pair of 12-megapixel sensors.
