Two women performed stand-up at Everest Base Camp

On July 5, Guinness World Records announced the latest world record for the highest altitude stand-up comedy performance. Ellie Gibson and Helen Thorn, aka ‘The Scummy Mummies’, hosted a comedy show at Everest Base Camp.

The duo’s performance was notable because it served to raise funds for Borne UK, a charity that studies premature birth and helps families affected by it. The organization also conducts research to find strategies to prevent premature births.

The 32-minute comedy set was performed in front of a crowd of around 30 (unknowingly) at Everest Base Camp. The women performed their routines wearing gold catsuits with gray and black stripes and used gold microphones.

In the span of three days, the video received more than 10,000 views and numerous comments.

The women prepared for the walk in advance.

Ellie Gibson revealed to Guinness World Records that her son Joe was born nine weeks early in December 2014. “Fortunately, he is doing well now; he seems to be in good health,” she said.

Gibson added that it was a scary time because most premature babies don’t survive. “I wanted to do anything to change that, to stop what other people are going through, and that’s why I started supporting the Borne UK charity,” she continued.

The women also talked about their Everest trekking experiences. The video captured their journey to Nepal and their arrival at Mount Everest Base Camp. They played where climber Nirmal Purja’s Everest Adventure Company had set up tents.

The women discussed their preparations for the expedition. Gibson said she went hiking and swimming before the expedition to prepare physically for climbing Everest.
