Shilpa Sarnobat, 64, of Bengaluru’s Nagawara neighbourhood, placed an order for lunch on August 6. She did, however, cancel the order a few minutes later. As a result, the food delivery platform slapped cancellation fees on her.

Two days later, on August 8, the woman received a call from an unknown number in the morning. The man on the other end of the queue introduced himself as a customer service representative from the meal delivery platform and insisted on refunding the woman’s cancellation fees.

She trusted him after discussing the food order specifics and downloaded an app and followed his instructions. This is when she handed him her bank account information. To her dismay, she then received a notice claiming that Rs 25,000 had been withdrawn from her account.

She did not receive a response when she called the individual. This was the point at which she was compelled to submit a complaint to the local police station.
