The Myanmar military junta brought several charges against them. Pro-democracy activists were executed or imprisoned. The common people and children also suffered a lot.

During that time, Turnell was detained in Yangon while working as an adviser to Aung San Suu Kyi. In May, it was revealed that State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, along with her advisors, were charged under Myanmar’s Official Secrets Law, which prohibits the possession or sharing of state information that is “useful to an enemy”. She was later asked to appear before a Naypyidaw court, where she faced a total of five charges and a sixth charge under the Official Secrets Act along with her advisers, including Turnell.
