Cortese began his professional career as a travel agent in Palmerston North. He joined the amateur theater society and soon discovered a passion for acting. Shane Cortese participated in several plays before moving to London in 1993 to further his newfound career. Cortese trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. After graduating from the Musical Theater Course in 1993, he spent 10 years touring the UK in musicals, performing numerous times in London’s prestigious West End. His performances won critical acclaim from UK critics. On April 29, 2005 he starred on the New Zealand version of Dancing with the Stars. Cortese also appeared in the lead role of Burying Brian, first episode. Shane Cortese appeared in the role of Loki in another of Griffin’s creations, The Almighty Johnsons, a role he held for all three seasons of the show.
