A distressing video was shared on social media over the weekend showing the shark attack victim lying on the sand in the town of Melaque on Saturday after rescuers carried her from the Pacific Ocean to safety.

Horrified onlookers could be heard shouting off-camera: “he’s lost his leg.”

The woman has been identified locally as María Fernández Martínez Jiménez, 26, a former marine biology student at the University of Guadalajara, who lived in the western state of Jalisco.

Jiménez was in the ocean with his daughter when he apparently noticed a shark in the water and rushed the girl to a floating play platform located 75 feet from the shore, said Rafael Araiza, head of the local office. of civil defense.

The heartbreaking incident occurred while a swimming race was taking place nearby, Civil Protection officials from the municipality of Cihuatlán reported.

“Our officials were carrying out support activities during a swimming event in the bay when they received reports of a person having trouble getting out of the sea,” the statement reads. “When they arrived in the area they discovered a woman who was lifeless and had an amputated leg, apparently after a shark attack.”

Authorities closed the beaches of Melaque and the nearby town of Barra de Navidad to swimming as a precaution.
