बसौड़ा व्रत की कथा
शीतला अष्टमी या बसौड़ा के शुभ दिन पर भक्त देवी शीतला की कथा पढ़कर उनकी पूजा करते हैं। शीतला माता को प्रसन्न करने और उनका दिव्य आशीर्वाद प्राप्त करने के लिए विशेष मंत्रों का जाप भी किया जाता है। स्कंद पुराण के अनुसार, देवी शीतला को समाधान और कारण दोनों के रूप में माना जाता है। ये चेचक जैसी महामारियों की देवी हैं।
देवी शीतला के त्यौहार से जुड़ी एक कथा में कहा गया है कि शीतला माता एक यज्ञ से आई थीं। उन्हें भगवान ब्रह्मा से वरदान मिला था कि जब तक वह अपने साथ विशेष दाल (उड़द की दाल) रखती है, तब तक वह हमेशा मनुष्यों द्वारा पूजी जाएगी। एक बार वह कई अन्य देवताओं के दर्शन कर रही थी और वहां दाल के सभी बीज चेचक के हानिकारक कीटाणुओं में बदल गए। और फिर देवी जिस किसी के भी दर्शन करती, चेचक और ज्वर से पीड़ित हो जाती।
देवताओं ने उन्हें इन कीटाणुओं के साथ पृथ्वी पर आने के लिए कहा। देवी शीतला पृथ्वी पर चली गईं, जहां वे पहली बार राजा विराट के राज्य में पहुंचीं। वहां जाकर माता ने राजा से एक ऐसी जगह की पेशकश की जहां उनकी पूजा की जा सके। चूंकि राजा भगवान शिव के पक्के भक्त थे, इसलिए उन्होनें माता शीतला को भगवान शिव से ऊपर सर्वोच्च स्थान देने से इनकार कर दिया।
महामारी का प्रकोप
इसके बाद शीतला माता क्रोधित और नाराज हो गईं और इस तरह लगभग पचहत्तर प्रकार की चेचकों को मुक्त कर दिया। इसकी वजह से बड़ी संख्या में लोग इस महामारी की चपेट में आए और उनमें से कई की मौत भी हो गई। इस पर राजा विराट को अपनी गलती का एहसास हुआ और उन्होंने देवी से क्षमा मांगी। जिसके बाद देवी ने सभी लोगों को ठीक किया। इसलिए, मान्यता है कि शीतला माता को प्रसन्न करने के लिए बसोड़ा का व्रत अवश्य करें और इस दिन बासी भोजन का सेवन करना चाहिए।
