Woman treated as ‘luggage’ before flight

A video of the humiliating move was posted in March but received more than 1.6 million views on TikTok as viewers debate whether the airline was discriminating against plus-size passengers.

“The entire airport trying to mind their own business as a woman is being asked to step on the luggage scale because she claimed she was 130lbs,” TikTok user @lilwessel wrote in the caption.

She said: “It’s a small plane, so they needed our weight to take off for safety reasons.” The passenger in question can be seen standing on the baggage scale in full view of the other passengers in the accompanying five-second video, which was filmed at an unidentified airport.

The video upset people on the internet.

The embarrassing experience reportedly divided TikTok commenters with one viewer writing, “Why are people so mean?” “That’s not right,” said another. Meanwhile, a third recalled being subject to a similar precaution, explaining: “I was flying home from the Philippines and they weighed me… I’ve never felt so embarrassed in my life.”

However, others sided with the airline. “Why would she lie and risk all of our lives, including hers?” one commenter criticized. “They worry about weight limits on small planes because they need to have the center weight in a certain part of the plane,” said another.

This comes on the heels of a host of body-positive influencers accusing airlines of not accommodating plus-size passengers. A plus-size TikToker went viral earlier this week after recommending that airlines should widen aisles to accommodate larger passengers, calling the current arrangement “discrimination.”

She also posted a now-deleted video showing her trying to get through the aisles of a United Airlines plane, having to turn sideways when going through the rows of seats.
