Birth and family
Sonam Wangchuk was born on September 1, 1966 in Uley Tokpo area of Ladakh. He is the son of politician and Indian National Congress party member Sonam Wangyal. He lived in such inaccessible places in Ladakh, where there was no electricity or education. As a father-in-law, he completed his education in Srinagar and Delhi.
Wangyal died a few years ago, leaving eight children. Wangchuk has three brothers who run a small business in Leh. Apart from them, he has 5 half brothers and sisters. One of his sisters works as a doctor in Delhi and another as a pilot at Indian Airlines in Calcutta. His third sister is a deputy judge in Leh.

Education
Born in a geographically difficult area, Wangchuk’s early education was provided by his mother. The school was located about 150 kilometers from his house. At the age of 7 he entered the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Srinagar. In the early school days, he had to face many problems. He didn’t know Hindi or English. After studying for some time in this school, he went to study at Vishesh Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi. Sonam graduated in mechanical engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar.

Popularity and social cause
After receiving education, Sonam returned to Ladakh. She established a school with the brothers called Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) in Ladakh. She took a loan of 40 thousand rupees for this school. Within a few months, he paid off his loan with all interest. She also receives training to develop innovative ideas along with teaching the students of this school. Ladakh is naturally isolated, no government plan can reach here. That is why she took the initiative to solve the problem in this area.
Sonam is known today for his work in Ladakh and across India. Impressed by his life, Bollywood filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani also made a film on him, 3 Idiots. In which Rancho’s character in the movie was influenced by Wangchuk.
