Starlink RV perfect for people who used to travel

Starlink RV, Elon Musk’s Internet, is now available in much of the world. In fact, people in Latin America have already ordered their antenna and subscription to get what has been called the fastest Internet in the world. Now, the company has announced a new product called Starlink RV, which is perfect for people who are always on the go but don’t want to lose their connection.

What is Starlink VR?

Starlink RV is the name of a new Starlink system that allows you to take the new rectangular Starlink receiver anywhere on the same continent where Starlink operates.

This can be perfect for people who don’t work in one place and have to travel, either by road or to different countries. It can also be great for campers, people who live out of their cars, or even people who go to a vacation home for a few months each year. So, for example, a user couldn’t connect to Starlink before because he was too far from his receiving antenna. Now, they can connect anywhere using the new rectangle as an antenna.

Starlink RV allows us to stay connected even when we are in very remote areas. That is, you will not lose any of your connection if you also want to go to a house hidden in the woods. Also, the system does not consume as much battery as I thought.

On the other hand, if you’ll only be using the RV for a season and don’t want it for permanent use, you can cancel your subscription at any time and only pay for the months you need it. This is another benefit of this system.

According to the Starlink RV review, natural obstacles and storms can slow down system performance such as internet speed. Although it is called VR, you cannot use it in a moving car. To use it, you would have to connect your antenna and reach your destination.

Also, the price is high, which is not a big surprise since the regular Starlink system is not cheap at all.

For now, the system is only available in the US, but it is expected to roll out to the rest of North America and Europe in the coming months and become more flexible so that Starlink RV can be used anywhere in the world.

Starlink VR vs Cellular

VR-grade signal boosters from companies like Weboost start at around $450 and probably would have made some of my tests with cellular data go faster. With a thruster, it can sometimes double or even quadruple its speed, but even then, it wouldn’t be as fast as the Starlink RV. And you can’t strengthen a signal that isn’t there.

For comparison, Zoom video conferencing needs at least 6 Mbps down and at least 2 Mbps up, while live streaming needs at least 6 Mbps up. But speed is not all that matters. Video conferencing and streaming can’t work if there are a lot of dropouts, and players can lose an online campaign if latency is greater than 60ms.

In terms of latency, the Starlink app reported a range of 28 to 88ms, with a median of 50ms. The more detailed Speedtest app also showed a latency of around 50 ms when there was no other traffic, with a range of 32 to 69 ms. It also said that upload latency (ping delay measured during uploads) was between 71 and 169 ms and download latency was between 161 and 293 ms. Starlink still needs to do some work to hit its 20-40ms latency target.

It only takes a few minutes to set up the Starlink RV hardware. Usually one has to put the dish on the ground or on top of my RV and run its 75 foot (23 meter) cable back to the Wi-Fi router, where it connects with a tricky Micro USB connector that is rarely aligns correctly. Then, plug the router into your RV’s AC port, ground power, or a large portable battery with a built-in inverter, and watch as Dishy spins and locks on to an aerial satellite. This gives a person time to enjoy space age technology while they have been struggling with slow or non-existent mobile networks.

When a person works in an open field or on the beach, for example, Starlink’s seamless line-of-sight connectivity ran for hours without network drops. This meant that I could attend video conferences, make calls over Wi-Fi, watch TikTok videos, and stream Netflix and YouTube videos without a problem.
