Staten Island Chuck says get ready for spring

Warmer days may soon return, New York City’s own rodent meteorologist predicted early Friday morning, minutes after Punxsutawney Phil predicted the same sunny outlook.

Staten Island Chuck, also known as Charles G. Hogg, didn’t see his shadow early Friday at the Staten Island Zoo’s annual Groundhog Day ceremony, as eager children could be heard singing “Early Spring, Early Spring.” spring”.

As centuries-old lore goes, if Chuck had seen his shadow, New York City would have been left with six more weeks of brutally cold temperatures.

But with no shadow in sight Friday, Chuck sided with the majority of New Yorkers who voted in the zoo poll and said they thought warm weather might be around the corner.

As he revealed his prediction, New York City representatives and zoo officials smiled widely while holding a sign that read “Spring is here.”

That was the same thing predicted by Punxsutawney Phil, who also couldn’t see his shadow at Gobbler’s Knob in western Pennsylvania.

That spells good news for those willing to ditch their winter coats, as Chuck has been right about the widespread forecast for the past 14 years, according to the Staten Island Advance.

The last time Chuck messed up was in 2009, the same year he bit former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Fox News meteorologist Greg Diamond said Chuck and Phil’s predictions will certainly look accurate in the coming weeks, although the sunny outlook might not last.

“It looks like in the next two weeks winter will be on pause,” he told The Post on Friday.

But, he said, the final weeks of February, before March, could bring colder temperatures back to the region.

However, this year’s celebration also had a solemn note: it marked the 10th anniversary of the death of beloved groundhog Charlotte.

Former Mayor Bill DeBlasio dropped the groundhog in 2014 as the anxious rodent tried to free itself.

Charlotte died from internal injuries a week later.
