It started when Twitter user ‘Tanvi’ posted a picture of the train and wrote: “For a second I thought I was back in Mumbai.”
Many people speculated and asked if this was really a local train line. To this, Tanvi responded by saying, “It’s NR – Northern Railway, I guess it goes to Faridabad and nearby NCR regions.” One Twitter user retweeted the image, saying: “Haan delhi mei bhi hai local trains if you guys didn’t know.”
The image is essentially that of the Delhi Suburban Railway.
For those unfamiliar, the Northern Railway operates a suburban rail service for the National Capital Region (NCR). It includes Delhi, as well as the neighboring districts of Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Sonipat. It also includes other parts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

If you didn’t already know, the history of local trains in Delhi dates back to the late 19th century. The establishment of the Delhi Junction railway station in 1864 marked the introduction of rail services in the city.
Over time, the demand for a local rail network grew as the population increased and commuting within the city became more challenging. The first local train service in Delhi, known as the Delhi Ring Railway, opened in 1975.
It was primarily designed as a circular rail route, connecting various parts of the city. The Delhi Ring Railway was initially operated by diesel locomotives and had 21 stations.
