Survivors of Lewiston mass shooting offered free tuition at Maine colleges

Survivors of the deadliest mass shooting in Maine history, along with family members of the 18 people killed, were given the opportunity to attend college for free.

Lewiston Strong’s tuition waiver will cover expenses for more than 80 victims affected by the Oct. 25 shooting when demented gunman Robert Card went on an indiscriminate rampage at a bar and bowling alley, sparking a tense two-day manhunt for the murderer.

“By all indications, those who died tragically were deeply dedicated to their families and worked hard to provide them with a strong future,” Dannel Malloy, chancellor of the University of Maine System, said in a statement Wednesday.

“While nothing will bring them back, the University of Maine System believes the best way to honor the memories of those who were taken too soon is to ensure their loved ones can easily access education and post-secondary opportunities.”

“Beyond unimaginable grief, we know there is also overwhelming anxiety about financial and other responsibilities for those directly affected, especially those who are suddenly single parents or who were physically injured due to this horrific mass shooting.”

Card suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, which medical examiners ruled had “probably” been administered between eight and 12 hours before his body was discovered.

The maniac’s motive remains a mystery, although officials are investigating Card’s extensive history of mental health problems.

Authorities had known about Card for months, as family members and others became increasingly concerned about his mental state.
