Suspect admits having ‘dispute’ with roommate over where remote control is before fatally shooting him: cops

A Maryland man was arrested after he allegedly shot and killed his roommate during an argument over a remote control, police said.

Richard Bennaugh, 38, of Springdale, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Domonique Scott Hayes, 27, last week.

Prince George’s County police said on Instagram on Friday that their officers responded around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

“Officers discovered the deceased inside a home suffering from gunshot wounds,” the police statement said. “He was pronounced dead at the scene.”

“Preliminary investigation revealed that Bennaugh shot the decedent during a dispute,” authorities added.

According to documents obtained by FOX 5 DC, Bennaugh called police about six hours after the shooting, which occurred between 5:30 a.m. and 6 a.m.

He reportedly told them that his roommate “had come at him with knives,” according to the document.

Bennaugh told police he fell asleep on the couch and was woken up by Scott Hayes “making a lot of noise” in the kitchen.

Scott Hayes then repeatedly asked Bennaugh where the remote was, but the suspect ignored him.

Bennaugh, who had a blanket over his head, took it off and allegedly saw Scott Hayes holding two knives.

The suspect then grabbed his gun and began shooting before running to his third-floor room.

The suspect claims he didn’t see Scott Hayes was wounded, so he assumed none of the bullets hit him and went back to sleep.
