Suspect charged in Tampa shooting that killed 2, injured 18 during Halloween festivities

A suspect was captured and charged in a shooting in Florida during Halloween fun early Sunday that left two dead, including a 14-year-old boy, and more than a dozen injured, police said.

Tyrell Stephen Phillips, 22, was charged with second-degree murder following the bloodshed, Tampa police announced Sunday afternoon.

Authorities have not identified the two fatal victims, but both were men, ages 14 and 20.

A grieving father told WFLA that his son Elijah Jaquan Wilson, 14, was one of the dead.

“I lost my son, I lost a second son to gun violence,” Emmitt Wilson told the station, adding, “In 2014, I lost my son. Now here it is, 2023, and my baby is no longer suffering from gun violence.”

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said during a news conference that a fight between two groups led to the shooting. One of the shooting victims died at the scene and the other succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Police said 16 other victims were hospitalized, including 15 who were hit by the hail of bullets, but only five are still recovering in the hospital. The injured victims were between 18 and 27 years old.

In total, 18 people were injured.

Chief Bercaw said a criminal charge was quickly filed against Phillips thanks to a series of tips from the public.

“We make arrests quickly and with a sense of urgency,” Bercaw said. “If you commit a crime in Tampa, you will pay and you will be charged.

He said during the news conference that police were “looking for other possible shooters.”

The shooting occurred in the Ybor City neighborhood shortly before 3 a.m., where several bars and nightclubs are located. Hundreds of people were on the streets because many establishments had just closed, a police spokesman said.

Many Halloween revelers were dressed in costumes, drinking and chatting in the street when about a dozen gunshots rang out. Then, a few seconds later, another eight shots were fired, according to footage posted online.

Police treated several people who were lying on the ground due to their injuries, as video of what happened shows.

The mayor of Tampa, Jane Castor, denounced that another shooting in the country caused multiple victims.

“We have to say, as a country, that enough is enough,” he said during the afternoon news conference.
