Suzuki partners with SkyDrive to produce ‘flying cars’ in Japan

Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor Corp announced Tuesday that it has closed a deal to produce “flying cars” with SkyDrive Inc.

The electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft will be manufactured by the companies at a Suzuki Group facility in central Japan; Manufacturing is expected to start in spring 2019.

According to the automaker, SkyDrive will set up a wholly owned subsidiary to manufacture the plane, while Suzuki will help with the factory setup, including talent acquisition.

SkyDrive, which is headquartered in the central Japanese city of Toyota, counts trading house Itochu Corp, tech giant NEC Corp and a division of energy company Eneos Holdings Inc among its biggest investors.

In March last year, the two companies agreed to collaborate on the study, creation and commercialization of flying cars.
