Taiwan Defense Ministry issues airstrike alert saying China has launched satellite

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry issued an alert Tuesday saying China launched a satellite and calling for caution days before the island’s elections.

Taiwan holds presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday that China has described as a choice between war and peace.

In English, the presidential alert sent to residents’ cellphones warned that a missile flyover was underway.

The alerts were triggered in the middle of an international press conference by Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu.

He clarified that it was a satellite launch, told reporters not to worry, and proceeded with the press conference.

China views Taiwan, which is about 100 miles off China’s east coast, as a renegade province that should come under its control.
