Last week, touching video footage acquired from a police helicopter recorded the reunification of a three-year-old and his parents. Ilya Dunin of Xenia, Ohio, went missing last Thursday when a carer became disoriented and he wandered into a neighbouring cornfield.
Even though Ilya had escaped his fenced-in backyard, cornfields in the area stand tall this time of year, between seven and ten feet tall, according to the local sheriff’s office and the family. This, combined with his wandering onto a huge swath of land teeming with brush, a creek, and two high-speed adjacent roads, prompted his parents, Bella and Leo Dunin, to contact him for assistance as soon as they knew of his departure.
Heartwarming Moment When A Missing 3-year-old Is Reunited With His Family
“We had a close family friend visit, and she came to play with him, so they were playing, and my husband was at work, and I went inside to feed the baby, and 30 minutes later, I got a phone call from the family friend saying she lost him in the cornfield,” Bella, the baby’s mother, told USA TODAY.
“He got away from her somehow, and I believe the cornfield is about 10 feet high, so it was pretty easy to lose him.” Bella dashed outside and called her husband, who contacted authorities for assistance.
Ilya appeared to have vanished into the woods at 5:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 20, according to backyard footage later reviewed by Bella. By 5:50 p.m., the Greene County Sheriff’s Office had been summoned and, together with the fire department, had arrived on the site. According to Greene County Sheriff Scott Anger, when deputies realised how big the search area was and how dense the corn had grown, they swiftly requested further aid.
Within minutes, officials from numerous departments and volunteers, including neighbours, family friends, and community members, had 75 to 100 people scanning the area for the boy. According to Anger, drones were launched, and the Ohio State Patrol was contacted for aerial assistance.
Soon after, the Ohio State Highway Patrol Aviation Unit dispatched a chopper to search for the youngster. Officials faced the hot, humid weather, the night’s heavy rain forecast, and severe thunderstorms.
A volunteer discovered Ilya’s shoes beside a brook that runs through the fields as the first trace of him. The creek had been a favourite spot of his last summer, according to Bella, but the finding caused more anxiety than relief at first. K9s were utilised by police to continue the search along the river while providing feedback to the pilot in the air. After nearly two hours, the youngster was seen strolling out of the thick cornfields and into the much shorter, easier to interpret soybean fields nearby.
Ilya can be seen forcing his way through the field in helicopter footage supplied by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. At the same time, the pilot can be heard radioing down to ground rescuers that the boy has been located. He then instructs rescuers on the boy’s whereabouts, and a crowd rushes to greet him. Ilya’s parents were told by radio that he had recovered and promptly given to them. Ilya’s parents were astounded by how far he had travelled, estimating he had travelled a little less than a mile, a substantial chunk of which was in the creek.
Fortunately, Ilya was discovered uninjured except for bruises and scratches. His family doctor arrived on the spot to perform an on-site health check, which came out negative.
Ilya had never been alone like this before, according to Bella, who defines herself as a “helicopter mum,” so she believed he was afraid at one point, as any three-year-old would be. However, when officials returned him on a golf cart, he looked more interested in the police cars and firetrucks crowding his house than in what he had just been through.
