Teen arrested after security guard shoots him in the head at New York high school football game

A teenage suspect was arrested for shooting a security guard who was shot in the head while breaking up a fight at a high school football game in New York over the weekend, police announced.

The suspect, a 16-year-old boy, surrendered to police on Sunday after being identified through numerous videos of the shooting at Thomas R. Proctor High School, the Utica Police Department said.

Police said the teen was not a student at Utica High School but was enrolled in “an alternative educational program.”

His name has not been released because he is a minor and police said they are looking to prosecute him as an adult.

The teen faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, along with several weapons offenses.

Police said other people could also be charged over the incident.

The group of about a dozen people began fighting outside the soccer field and a pair of security guards rushed to intervene, footage of the incident showed.

Two gunshots were then heard and one of the guards fell to the ground with a gunshot wound to the back of his head, police said.

He was rushed to the hospital in critical but stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery, according to police.

Investigators have not revealed an official motive for the initial fight, but police said it could have been gang-related.
