In some parts of India, it is a tradition that as soon as a girl reaches puberty, she is pushed into the marriage market. Well, although things in the arranged marriage scene have improved a lot, there are still practices and the propagation of stereotypes that harm women and their well-being.

Woman fed up with criticism that shames the age of arranged marriages
Pointing out one such nightmare, a woman shared her thoughts on age shaming in arranged marriage settings on Twitter. She wrote: “Imagine being rejected by mothers of 28 and 31 year old men because you are 25, not 22.”
Imagine being rejected by mothers of 28 and 31 year old men because you are 25 and not 22 🤡 Imagine people telling you no because you don’t look like an 18 year old at the age of 25. “Age zyada lag rahi hai larhki ki” I’m so fed up. With everyone and everything.

The woman added: “Imagine people saying no to you because you don’t look like an 18 year old at the age of 25. ‘Age zyada lag rahi hai larhki ki’ I’m so fed up. With everyone and everything.”
She went on and talked about how most women have to put up with such slander for the sake of their parents, who want their daughter to get married and settle down. “Imagine you have to put up with this nonsense JUST because of your parents. I don’t even want to get married. Things you have to do for her happiness.”
“Letting my mental health deteriorate further by putting up with all of this is my Mother’s and Father’s Day gift for the next 50 years,” the user concludes.
People on the Internet sympathized with the user
People online were sympathetic to the woman, with most commenting on things like “same sister.” One user shared her anecdote about being rejected because of her height, “Bruh I was rejected by the father of a 29 year old 5″7 guy because I’m 5″2 saying “height kam h ladki ki” and that guy was already 7 years old older than what Desi’s parents think their son is.”

A man also chimed in, sharing his experience of sorting the rishtas: “I actually told my mom today to take a break from the ‘rishtas’ because even as a man I’m exhausted.”
In fact today I told my mom to take a break from the “rishtas” because even as a man I am exhausted. I figured this rishta aunty boomer culture is dying and self-imploding… To them, it’s just about that 20k they get out of pocket…

Another woman acknowledged the client’s struggle: “I know it’s a process, but being rejected is the worst feeling one can witness. Your confidence collapses, you blame yourself for the shame and problems of your parents. Sometimes I think we should choose our partner ourselves if possible.”

While one shared how she also faced rejection due to her age, “I was rejected because I was 2 years younger than the guy and his mom thought the age difference wasn’t enough.”
They rejected me because I was 2 years younger than the boy and his mom thought the age difference wasn’t enough. She is friends with a close relative and she is still looking for rishtas since 3 years.
