"The human mind is the most flexible instrument": Narayana Murthy dismisses AI as a job threat

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy does not see artificial intelligence as a threat to jobs. Instead, he sees it as a revolutionary enhancement of human capabilities, seeing AI as the next technological frontier.

In an interview with Moneycontrol, Murthy explores the significant impact of AI, highlighting its ability to tackle problems and emphasizing the remarkable flexibility of the human mind.

Delving into the rapid advancements of AI, Murthy praises the technology for enhancing human intellect.

Whether it’s the evolution to ChatGPT-4 or the application of supervised algorithmic thinking, it recognizes the critical role of data in shaping the machine learning landscape.

“Algorithms, whether unsupervised or semi-supervised, whatever they are, need a lot of data. You need to collect a lot of data. Because at the end of the day, machine learning, in general, is a very complex piece of pattern matching. Even ChatGPT has great language models. “It’s about combining patterns.” the 77-year-old said.

Murthy advocates the transition from an oral to a written culture, emphasizing the need to generate extensive data relevant to India’s cultural and developmental context.

It draws parallels with historical technological advances to allay concerns that AI will make coders obsolete.

Recalling the case tools of the 1970s, Murthy underlines the adaptability of the human mind as the most versatile tool.

He conceives AI not as a substitute but as an aid to human ingenuity, stating that its true potential lies in addressing more complex problems and contributing to improving the world.

“By the time you started thinking about bigger, more complex problems, these tools couldn’t handle it. So my personal feeling, I may be wrong, is that as we use AI as a tool to help human beings do bigger things, do more complex things, I think we will start to solve more complex problems.” he added.

Murthy points to specific domains such as automated driving and precision surgery where AI has the potential to augment human capabilities, showing its ability to advance and complement various fields.

“Using AI to control nuclear reactors is a wonderful thing, or controlling power plants is a great thing, right? So there are areas where humans can use AI to reduce reaction resolution time and make those systems work better. And surgery, for example, precision surgery. AI is very, very useful in precision surgery; Robotics is very useful.” Murthy said, talking about his possible challenges.

He concluded the discussion on the matter by saying, “As long as, as I noted before, we make sure that these technologies do not fall into the hands of evil people. That’s all. But the same thing with the gun, the moment an evil person has the gun, we’ve seen what happened, right in the United States.”
