December begins with rain and snow spreading across the Northeast over the weekend due to a cold front moving in from the west.
Tropical moisture flowing north from the Gulf of Mexico is interacting with the front to produce widespread rainfall, the FOX Forecast Center said.
It is expected to be too hot for most places to see snow, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s.
However, in the higher elevations of New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, colder air will allow precipitation to fall as a few inches of snow.
While New York and Philadelphia will only see cold rain, parts of upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts could see significant snow.
Initial snowfall forecasts show more than 5 inches could fall across much of northern Maine and even northern New Hampshire.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, computer forecast models suggest the active weather pattern will continue into next week, bringing several rounds of rain and snow to the Northeast.
However, there are currently no major storms or nor’easters forecast that could cause major travel disruptions.
