Then And Now: Cindy Crawford’s Nostalgic Return To Super Bowl Advertising After 31 Years

Exactly 31 years after it was first shown, supermodel Cindy Crawford has returned to grace our screens with a recreated version of her legendary Super Bowl commercial. The original commercial debuted during the 1992 Super Bowl and has endured and had a lasting impression on popular culture. Three decades later, Cindy Crawford’s 57-year-old comeback to fame is evidence of a classic commercial’s enduring power and her ageless beauty.

In the first Super Bowl commercial, two young boys watched in wonder as a youthful Cindy Crawford pulled up to a remote petrol station, got out of her sports vehicle, and drank an ice-cold Pepsi. The commercial became an immediate classic due to its unique blend of young charm, effortless beauty, and lighthearted humour that connected with viewers.

Crawford is wearing the same white tank top and blue denim bottoms from 31 years ago in the “One Margarita” remix video.

But this time, she stops at what looks like a cantina south of the border for a margarita to quench her thirst.

Visitors will also notice tequila from Casamigos, a company Rande Gerber, Crawford’s husband, and George Clooney co-founded, on display at the bar.

This summer, That Chick Angel—a singer, podcaster, and comic named Angel Laketa Moore—recorded the song “One Margarita.” Rapper Saucy Santana, who recently worked with Madonna on a contemporary rendition of “Material Girl,” is featured in the remix.

Due to its graphic lyrics, the original version of “One Margarita” garnered international attention and was reportedly streamed over 10 million times. On TikTok, where it has been included in over 60,000 videos—including ones by Lizzo and Janelle Monáe—it has also become a viral hit.

Moore claims to have gotten the inspiration for the song from a lecture by Christian evangelist Cynthia Smock, well known on TikTok as Sister Cindy and notorious for her anti-LGBTQ and sex-shaming views.

Moore stated that she didn’t want to make fun of Sister Cindy in an interview with HuffPost last month, but she did feel that the sermon’s insane content was personal.

Moore remarked, “I know there’s a lot of shame put on sexuality and sexual expression, but I grew up Christian, and I identify as Christian.” It’s not common to hear a woman declare, “I’ma put it in your bum,” or to even discuss anal sex in a song, she continued.
