As we wait for another historic clash between the Titans, here are India’s five most iconic moments against Pakistan:
1. 1996 World Cup, Bengaluru: Venkatesh has the last laugh
In the past, when the rivalry between India and Pakistan was thornier than the current friendly joy between the two teams, the players did not shy away from provoking each other on the field.
During the 1996 World Cup match in Bengaluru, India’s Venkatesh Prasad owned Pakistan’s Amer Sohail. Chasing a total of 288, Pakistan seemed to have the upper hand over India. When Sohail came forward and provoked Venkatesh by gesturing towards the boundary after scoring a four.
After Sohail taunted Venkatesh, the Indian bowler won the fight in style by scoring a clean shot with his next delivery. Venkatesh returned the favor by pointing towards the dressing room after breaking Sohail’s stump.

2. 2015 World Cup, Adelaide: Kohlie advances
Before King Kohli dared to do it, no other Indian batsman had scored a century against Pakistan in a World Cup match. In 2015, Virat Kohli proved that he was a beast on the field by scoring India’s first World Cup century against Pakistan.
Playing in Australia, the batsman entered the field after the team lost 2 opening wickets. The young batsman scored 107 off 126 balls, giving India a 76-run victory.
3. 1999 Test series, Chennai: Indian crowd applauds Pakistan
Fans in Chennai witnessed the first of the three test match series between India and Pakistan in 1999. During the fourth innings of the match, India faced a crushing score of 82/5. However, all hope was not lost as a young Tendulkar, aged 25, was still manning the stumps.
He would go on to score one of his most memorable Test centuries. When Sachin finished, India were just 17 runs away from a victory with 3 wickets to spare. However, Pakistan surprised the spectators in Chennai by turning around the lost match and wrapping up the Indian line-up with just four more runs on the scoreboard.
The crowd at the Chennai stadium gave the rival team a standing ovation for their unwavering determination and eventual victory in the match.
4. 1996 World Cup, Bangalore – Ajay Jadeja Torres on Waqar Younis
These innings from the 1996 World Cup always come to mind when we think of the moments that defined Ajay Jadeja’s career. Facing the best bowler of the time, Waqar Younis, Jadeja overcame every batsman’s nightmare.
Jadeja left people speechless after scoring 45 runs off just 25 balls and a strike rate of 180; Please note that this was not a T20I match. While batting against Younis, Jadeja scored a staggering 23 runs in just five balls before being dismissed in the sixth ball.
5. 1999 Test series, Delhi: Anil Kumble’s 10v10 performance
After a close defeat against Pakistan in Chennai, India were looking forward to redemption during the second Test in Delhi. One man ended up owning the Pakistani team with his incredible bowling and winning the match for India.
Anil Kumble took a whopping 10 wickets for 74 runs and led India to a 212-run victory. With his stellar performance, Kumble became the second bowler after English cricketer Jim Laker to take all ten wickets in a match.
