Republican presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott spoke personally about the campaign trial amid growing speculation about the lifelong bachelor’s love life.
“I’m dating a lovely Christian girl,” the South Carolina senator told Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird when asked at the Faith & Freedom Coalition in Des Moines on Saturday.
“One of the things I love about the gospel of Jesus Christ is that it always points us in the right direction. Proverbs 18:22 says, ‘He who finds a wife finds something good and obtains favor from the Lord,’” Scott continued.
“So, can we pray together for me?” he added to laughter from the crowd.
Bird had asked Scott, 57, if “other than your mom, are there any special women in your life?” The investigation into him came on the heels of a lengthy Washington Post article last week that delved into the senator’s love life.
The outlet warned that it could not independently confirm its existence other than to “note that a presidential campaign that essentially reverses catfishing in America would be crazy.”

Scott reluctantly talked about his girlfriend to the newspaper and told how a friend from church set them up.
Scott’s campaign declined to release her name or arrange an off-the-record chat with her.
One of Scott’s close friends, Brian Moniz, son of the 57-year-old’s late mentor, John Moniz, told the newspaper that he did not know the girlfriend.

Still, at least one person has crossed paths with Scott’s girlfriend: his 2024 campaign manager, Jennifer DeCasper, who claims to have dated the mystery woman at the zoo.
Scott publicly revealed that he had a girlfriend in May.
Conversations about Scott’s love life sparked some concerns among donors, according to an Axios report from late August.
Donors reportedly wanted more details about Scott’s single status.
At the moment, he is the only major contender on either side who has never married. It has been more than 139 years since a single man ascended to the Oval Office.
James Buchanan is speculated to have been the first gay president to remain unmarried after becoming president in 1856.
“An old bachelor is, at best, half a man,” said the New York Evening Post, as the New York Post was then known in Buchanan’s day. “How can such a person be more than half a president?”
Scott’s counterpart in South Carolina, Sen. Lindsey Graham, previously ran for president in 2016 and was unmarried, though he publicly mused that his sister would likely serve as a rotating first lady.
Despite his single status, the senator “always had a way with the ladies,” according to Moniz.
A key reason she hasn’t been able to marry anyone is her very demanding work schedule, Moniz surmised.
“It’s been a challenge, mostly for the women in his life over the years,” Moniz told the Washington Post. “They remain in the background. “Women have been there for a while and they realize that they are not going to be the top priority right now.”
Scott is currently in seventh place with 2.5% support in the latest set of polls from RealClearPolitics.
