Former President Donald Trump has expressed his support for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in the race for speaker of the House of Representatives.
The 77-year-old former president revealed the endorsement, which likely makes Jordan the front-runner for the speakership, in a Truth Social post early Friday morning.
“Jim, his wife Polly and their family are exceptional. “He will be a GREAT Speaker of the House and has my complete and total support!” Trump wrote, calling the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee a “star” who is “respected by everyone.”
Jordan and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) have filed their names as candidates for House Speaker following the unprecedented impeachment of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from office earlier this week.
Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas), who previously vowed to nominate Trump for the vacant presidential seat, first revealed Trump’s decision in a tweet on Thursday, and now says he intends to “fully support” the Jordan candidacy.
“I just had a great conversation with President Trump about the president’s career,” Nehls wrote. “He supports Jim Jordan and I think Congress should listen to the leader of our party.”
“I fully support Jim Jordan as Speaker of the House,” he added.
Rep. Barry Moore (R-Alabama) echoed his Republican colleague.

“President Trump has endorsed the chairman of the judiciary [Jim Jordan] for President of the House. “I think we should listen to the leader of our party.” Moore tweeted, shortly after Nehls’ publication. “I know President Jordan will help us achieve real victories for the American people, and I fully support him as Speaker of the House.”
Trump’s seal of approval on Jordan’s run for president comes just hours after the 2024 Republican presidential primary front-runner revealed he would accept a short-term role as House speaker “if necessary” to unite to the Republican Party.
“I’ve been asked if I would take it for a short period of time for the party, until they come to a conclusion,” Trump told Fox News Digital. “I’m not doing it because I want to; I will do it if necessary, in case they can’t make a decision.”

Trump signaled that he would be willing to serve in office for a “30, 60 or 90 day period,” but that his primary focus is his presidential campaign.
The former president also told the outlet that he will travel to Washington and meet with Republican lawmakers at the Capitol on Tuesday, when the Republican conference will hold a candidate forum to discuss possible options for the vacant president’s position.
The full House is expected to begin the electoral process the next day and continue until a new president is elected.

Several Republican lawmakers who have expressed strong support for a Trump presidency, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Greg Steube (R-Fla.), have yet to publicly shift their allegiance to Jordan.
Trump, who faces 91 charges in four criminal cases, is ineligible for president under current House GOP rules, which bar people with felony allegations from serving in the office, but the rules could be modified to clear the way for Trump to be president. .
The Trump campaign and Jordan’s office did not respond to the Post’s request for comment.
