Trump gets Rubio and Burgum endorsements while Haley gets Hogan on eve of Iowa Caucuses

INDIANOLA, Iowa – With just one day left before the caucuses, former President Donald Trump and former U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley are enjoying major endorsements.

During Trump’s speech to a packed room at Simpson College’s Kent Campus Center on Sunday, he surprised attendees with North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, a former 2024 foe.

“I am here to do something that none of the other presidential primary candidates have done, and that is to endorse Donald J. Trump for president of the United States of America,” Burgum proclaimed to the excited crowd.

“I’ve seen President Trump and what he’s been able to do, I’ve seen him as a business leader and I’ve seen him as a governor,” he added. “I’ve seen the difference President Trump can make.”

Burgum, a billionaire businessman, dropped out of the 2024 Republican primary early last month.

Not long after Burgum’s surprise endorsement, another former Trump rival also endorsed the former president: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), albeit in a more subtle way.

Rubio endorsed Trump over Ron DeSantis, governor of his home state of Florida, whom he did not mention in a social media endorsement.

“When Trump was in [the White House] “I achieved important policies that I had worked on for years (such as the expansion of the Child Tax Credit and harsh sanctions on the regime in Cuba and Venezuela) because we had a President who did not give in to special interests or allow bureaucrats to block us,” Rubio published in X.

“I support Trump because that type of leadership is the ONLY way to achieve the extraordinary actions necessary to fix the mess Biden has created. It’s time to get on with the work of beating Biden and saving America!

Rubio had fought fiercely with Trump in the 2016 Republican primary cycle, and the two traded nicknames and verbal bombshells during the election campaign.

He took the time to convince Trump, who had urged him to safeguard his Senate seat in 2016 after their presidential primary fight. Florida Sen. Rick Scott endorsed Trump last November.

On Sunday, Haley also earned a high-profile endorsement, with former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan giving her his official seal of approval.

“What this race is about is trying to nominate the strongest possible candidate for November,” Hogan told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “I’m convinced the momentum is with Nikki Haley.”

Hogan, who was term-limited as governor and left office in January 2023, had become one of the most outspoken Republicans against Trump.

His name had once been mentioned as a possible contender for the 2024 Republican nomination, but he refused to throw his hat in the ring. Hogan has also been considered a third-party contender, something he has downplayed.

Trump heads to the Iowa Caucuses on Monday as the favorite, with a big lead, according to polls.

After Iowa, the Republican primary will head to New Hampshire for the January 23 election.
