Former President Trump would overtake President Biden if the 2024 election comes down to a rematch between the two, a new poll suggests.
Trump leads the hypothetical race with 49% to Biden’s 45% among registered voters nationally, according to a poll conducted by SSRS for CNN.
Although the margin is small, it comes just days after polls indicated the 45th president is building considerable leads with just a year to go until Election Day, including in five of six key battleground states.
The SSRS poll shows that voters’ faith in Biden has continued to decline over the past two and a half years, with 61% saying they disapprove of his handling of the country, 42% of whom said they feel “strongly” about their dissatisfaction.
The 39% approval rating is the lowest any modern president has seen in his re-election bid, including Trump, who stood at 41% a year before he was ousted from the presidency.
While the poll indicates that the two one-term presidents will likely face each other next year, it also suggests that neither of them is overtly endearing themselves to the American public.
Only 36% see Biden favorable compared to 59% who see him unfavorable, while 38% are favorable and 56% unfavorable to Trump.

A surprising 72% of respondents believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, and 61% of voters believe the commander in chief is contributing to the problem.
By comparison, 57% saw Trump as “part of the problem” and 42% saw him as part of the solution.
Biden’s age, long a point of contention among his opponents, is a strong detriment to his re-election campaign.

Only a quarter of Americans believe the 80-year-old “has the stamina and acumen to serve effectively as president,” while 53% believe Trump does despite being just three years younger.
However, when it comes to Trump’s weaknesses, the public finds strength in Biden.
About half of voters said the commander in chief respects the rule of law, compared to just 35% who say Trump does.

Only a third of voters believe Trump is honest and trustworthy, compared to 42% who believe Biden is.
Overall, half of voters said there was no chance they would vote for Biden, compared to 48% who said they would not support Trump under any circumstances.
Only 4% of undecided voters said they could be persuaded to support the current president, and only 2% would consider voting for Trump.
The SSRS poll surveyed 1,514 adults drawn from a probability-based panel from Oct. 27 to Nov. 2 and has a margin of error of about 3.1 points.
