At that time she was stationed in Kuwait and was one of the first women to enter a Kuwaiti military facility and also received the Kuwait National Guard Award. Tulsi was promoted from the rank of Captain to that of Major at a ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. She was later faced with a controversy when a video of her in Army uniform was posted on her Facebook page “VoteTulsi” and became a part of the Election Propaganda. The Hawaii Army National Guard instructed her to remove the video as it is against military ethics. She immediately removed the video from her page. Gabbard left the Hawaii Army National Guard and joined the Army Reserves with a California-based unit and was later promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Tulsi became a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee in 2013. During that time, she criticized the debate system held by Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman, where she only held 6 debates compared to 26 debates in the previous examples, and also excluded candidates who participated in any non-DNC debate events. Her Criticism went public by the New York Times and she spoke of the unhealthy atmosphere in DNC. She launched a petition to end the Democratic Party Process of appointing superdelegates in the nomination process.
