On Wednesday, the microblogging platform Twitter revealed its new policy to curb abusive language on the platform. The company has indicated that it will adopt a “zero tolerance” stance regarding “serious situations.”
The online service said in a series of tweets that it had updated its standards regarding posting violent content and language similar to what it prohibits. The Elon Musk-controlled social media network announced that it has officially unveiled its Violent Speech Policy.
Although the new policy builds substantially on the old, it prohibits making threats of violence, wishing harm on others, glorifying violence, and inciting others to engage in violent behavior. This regulation also prohibits threats to damage homes, shelters, or infrastructure necessary for civic or commercial activity.
In a tweet, the company reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on violent rhetoric. He said that in the vast majority of cases, he will suspend any account that violates company policies. Twitter has announced that it will force users to remove content from their accounts before they can regain access for less serious violations.

While the contents of the latest policy are comparable to the current one, the latest policy is somewhat confusing and extremely specific. In most cases, banning users for threatening or glorifying violence is not allowed under any policy; however, the most recent guidelines expand on specific scenarios while downplaying others.
The platform policy has undergone numerous revision and implementation iterations in recent years. With that said, this is the most recent revision to Twitter’s policy guidelines since Elon Musk took over the company. Twitter’s security policy was revised in 2018 to prohibit communication that dehumanizes anyone based on their membership in a recognizable group. This was done because such speech can cause harm offline.
Twitter announced in 2019 that it would increase its policy on harmful activity. According to the policy, “We do not allow language that dehumanizes people based on their religion, caste, age, disability, disease, race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation.”
