Two people died and at least nine were hospitalized Saturday after a horrific 35-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in central California, authorities said.
The incident, which involved 17 vehicles and 18 large trucks, occurred on the south side of the highway in Bakersfield and fog is believed to be the primary cause, according to BakersfieldNow.com.
Shocking images of the aftermath showed mangled tractor-trailers, including one half overturned on the side of the road, a white pickup truck wedged between two flatbeds and mangled cargo boxes, with some of their contents spilling onto the road.

“I just witnessed the biggest, scariest accident of my life,” said a motorist traveling on the northbound side of I-5. wrote in X.
Manny Garcia, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol in Buttonwillow, said he expected the crash to leave much of the highway closed for the rest of the day.
CHP said the crash is under investigation.
