A Ukrainian family of nine, including two young children, was executed in cold blood while they slept in a Russian-occupied city, leading to the arrest of two Russian soldiers.

The mass murder occurred on Saturday night in Volnovakha, an industrial city located between the Moscow-controlled cities of Donetsk and Melitopol.

The soldiers, who have not been identified, are said to have been drunk when they allegedly shot dead the entire Kapkanets family after the victims refused to give up their home so a Russian military unit could move in, according to a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office of the Donetsk region of Ukraine.

The killers had used machine guns fitted with silencers to methodically kill family members one by one in their beds, Russian media reported.

The victims have been identified as the head of the family, Eduard Kapkanets, 53, and his wife, Tatiana, whose 51st birthday the family had celebrated a few hours before the massacre.

One of the photographs from the scene showed the kitchen table still laden with leftover food from dinner and several bouquets of flowers placed in vases in a corner.
