A couple and their puppy were stranded on a sailboat that took to sea about 90 miles from Hernando Beach on Florida’s west coast.
A porthole broke and water filled their vessel, according to the US Coast Guard, which posted video of its helicopter crew rescuing the trio.
A Coast Guard helicopter flew over the ship in the Gulf of Mexico as the crew carried the couple and their dog to safety.
All are in “good health,” the Coast Guard said in a news release.
The Coast Guard received a digital selective call (DSC) alert around 11 a.m. Saturday.
The water damaged the ship’s electronics, according to the Coast Guard, but the DSC alert instantly sent a distress alert to the Coast Guard and other rescue authorities.
“Because the water ruined the system, this alert gave us its last known position and allowed us to investigate because the owners recorded it on their equipment,” said Lt. JG Connor Sullivan, Sector St. Petersburg command duty officer, in a statement.

This is how they were able to find and rescue the family.
The rescue of the ship is being coordinated, the Coast Guard said.
